This is blowing up my facebook right now. Yellow car is pissed for some reason, stops on track and waits for the race leader (white car) to come around. When the leader comes around, the yellow car intentionally hits him, and spins him off the track.
The white car still won the race.
From the original poster (and videographer, Nick Feathers):
“Sloe was P3 but was pissed about not getting P1 after contact at the beginning of the race between him and mcdermid. Hosni was p1 and mcdermott was p2 but hosni had a mechanical so mcdermid went to p1. With 2 laps to go sloe coasted down with what was presumed to be a “mechanical”, but the engine was running the entire time. He stopped near the top of the hill in T5, but stuck it in neutral and coasted back down the hill backwards closer to the middle of the track...just enough so he could get the angle of mcdermid entering T4 in his rear view mirror. Mcdermid entered 4 on the last lap and sloe seen him, gunned it and dive bombed him intentionally in T6 hitting mcdermid’s right rear spinning him. Mcdermid still recovered and won the race...then did a big burnout in front of sloe on the victory lap.”

What is this, NASCAR?

As an SCCA club racer myself, someone probably just got their license yanked.

That’s the expectation. Rumor is it’s not the first time that driver has pulled something stupid like that.

The surprising thing is that he got to runoffs. Usually guys like that weed themselves out much further down the food chain. Although, I suppose the dude in the mustang could’ve qualified to get to nationals by having enough good results due to people not being willing to race him.
There was a guy in our region who was known for being so willing crash people out in regional races (so that he could get that glorified bowling trophy at the end of the year) that no one would race him. While he was never this blatant, we wouldn’t race him in the IT run group. He also had the habit of taking both hands off the wheel and standing on the brakes whenever he felt like he was going to spin, hit the wall or otherwise just have an off course excursion. He crashed a lot. Even when he wasn’t trying to crash folks that would race him, he was so unpredictable that you didn’t want to be near him on the track. When you saw his ITE covette come up behind you, everyone just lifted and pointed him buy. Even in a heated battle with someone in my class, both of us would usually lift to let him buy before resuming our battle. This guy eventually stopped playing because he couldn’t understand why no one would race him.

What a dumb fuck! Someone needs to whack this guy in the head and nuts with a breaker bar. So he can remember why he shouldn’t do that, and so he can’t reproduce.

How did somebody who drives like that even get a licence? At least with a series like ChumpCar, you know there’s now licence requirement, so you just sort of shrug when somebody does something stupid, and an intentional contact is a perma-ban. Isn’t SCCA supposed to be the more grown-up org?

In theory, SCCA is supposed to more grown up. Although, the early days of Spec Miata had an awful lot of bodywork inducing shenanigans going on (some a product of close racing, some a product of stewards not putting the smack down on folks when needed). Getting the license is pretty easy. Just keep your nose clean through the driver school phase and don’t do anything too stupid on your learners permit for the first two race weekends.
For the guy I mentioned, I don’t know that he ever intentionally crashed anyone so much as he was willing to take stupid risks and race for a bowling trophy as if it was the last lap of some race with a million dollar purse. Combine stupid risks, a disproportional desire to win and the habit of taking your hands off the wheel when you think something bad might happen, and you get your competitors being unwilling to race you at the regional level. I only know of one guy that actually crashed because of him, although there were many close calls. However, the following day after he crashed himself and a competitor out, he crashed a borrowed racecar into the wall hard because he took his hands of the wheel and stood on the brakes when the rear end of that spec miata stepped out on him into a relatively low-speed corner. That was the last weekend anyone raced him.
He had also been a long time corner worker. That may be why the stewards were never willing to really come down on him. Then again, after a season of being pointed by every car he came up on, he eventually got the hint all on his own.

Usually, questionable incidents will result in points on your license, close scrutiny and unpleasant conversations with stewards. An intentional act can get your license yanked on the spot by the chief steward, and fighting in the pits will usually get you expelled from SCCA.

Sloe is a major hothead. Very fast racer and talented mechanic, long time SCCA racer. BUT this was completely unacceptable, and deliberate, behavior. At this point he’s under suspension pending further action from SCCA board of directors.

I saw this happen in front of me. I was with Nick and Nolan when this happened

I have my SCCA comp license. I was highly considering running in A-Sedan this year but decided not to after seeing how much of an arms race it is. I have heard rumblings of Tom Sloe for years and years now. Most of it was that he was always pushing, if not exceeding the rule book. But the term “hack” was often in reference to his name. This move was no surprise for the A-sedan drivers that i know. I am so glad i stuck to chumpcar.
